Engr. Juanitas, Engr. Maceren, Engr. Celeres, Engr. Nicolas and I were gathered in a dinner and there was a sudden spark of brilliant question from one of the engineers: “Ma-dato gyud ta kaayo bah og kabalo ta mudakop og kilat. Posible ba? Dako kaayo na nga energy ba if ever.”

Silence came in. Then we laughed out loud. I wondered, is there really someone who has attempted to do such thing? A combination of electrical, civil, and electronics engineering fields were expected to come out with an idea. Then theories flooded in, opposing its possibility.

-The difficult predictability of the strike location of the lightning bolt.

-The energy storage system of the lightning wherein it should be stored within a fraction of a second.

The discussion continued. One of us claimed that there is no need to predict lightning because it is evident that it strikes high altitude objects like trees…

How do we really measure “N-inch screen size” of electronic devices?

It might be a puzzle to some people how is N-inch screen measured in laptops, TVs, mobile phones etc.  The screen size of a gadget is basically the measurement of the diagonal of the screen. In mathematical point of view, a diagonal is a line connecting two non-adjacent vertices of a polygon, and displays are in a form of rectangle. The diagonal becomes the hypotenuse of the congruent two right triangles formed in the rectangle. The diagonal measurement allows the manufacturers to have a freedom of choosing the dimensions of the rectangular display (length and width specifically). The ratio of length is to width dimensions of the rectangle is called the aspect ratio of the screen. Basically, screen size is defined by two factors: the diagonal and the aspect ratio.
